Lenovo is possibly maybe thinking about an OLED ThinkPad T500

Laptops of all sorts are getting thinner, even the decidedly stoic and business-minded ThinkPad series. Hot on the heels of impressing us with its T400 refresh Lenovo is letting slip that it's having thoughts of putting its T500 series on a diet as well, with marketing manager David Critchley indicating that the company wouldn't be opposed to making a super-thin OLED version of the laptop -- "if demand is there." That's not really saying much since just about any company would do the same if they thought they could sell enough of the things. Well, maybe not Toshiba. That might be a little too exciting to fit in with the rest of its lineup.

HP Mini 5101 cleans up nice, shows the serious side of netbooks

Just when you thought you were safe from the netbook horde, along comes HP's new Mini 5101 to tempt you with the same basic specs once again, but this time with a slick aluminum and magnesium chassis to appeal to the "mobile professional" or anyone else with a bit of class. In a crazy twist, HP has **finally moved the mouse buttons below the trackpad (because only professionals like clicking), and has included other perks like a 7200 RPM hard drive, Bluetooth 2.0, 2 megapixel webcam, and options of either a WSVGA (1024 x 600) or "HD" (1366 x 768) 10.1-inch LED screen. There are also options for 80GB or 128GB SSD drives, four-cell or six-cell batteries, with the latter rated at an improbable eight hours of runtime, and of course WWAN. There's a start price of $449, but with some of these options we could see that shooting up pretty fast -- especially if you pick the optional USB-powered external disc drive, external speakers or port replicator. It's not cheap being cheap. The Mini 5101 goes on sale in July.

Toshiba NB205 netbook now available to order

We've seen this one up close and reviewed, but it looks like you can now finally get your hands on Toshiba's new NB205 netbook, which certainly makes an admirable attempt at standing out from the netbook pack. While there's a low-end, black-only model available with a standard keyboard and cheaper materials for $349, the real stand-out is the $399 model available in your choice of four different colors, which adds a higher quality chassis and a chiclet-style keyboard that has earned rave reviews from some. Otherwise, you can expect the usual Atom N280 processor on each, along with 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display, and a standard six-cell battery that promises an impressive nine hours of use.

Acer rolls out new budget-minded Aspire laptops

They may not be quite as thin and light as Acer's Timeline laptops, but the company's latest trio of Aspire models will at least save you a few bucks, and give you some decent enough specs as well. On the low-end of the lot are the 15.6-inch AS5536 and the 17.3-inch AS7735Z (pictured above), the former of which packs an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics, and a 320GB hard drive, while the latter sports a Pentium T4200 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, and a 250GB hard drive. Both of those, however, are bested by the 15.6-inch AS5739G, which dials things up to a Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, 4GB of RAM, NVIDIA Geforce GT130M graphics with 1GB of memory, a 250GB hard drive, and a built-in Blu-ray drive -- all for just $750. Look for all three to be available this month, with the AS5536 and AS7735Z running $480 and $600.

ASUS Eee PC 1005HA up for pre-order on Amazon

ASUS' Eee PC 1005HA (the cooler, younger brother of the 1008HA) impressed us when we first caught a peep of it in the wild. Internally, the two netbooks are identical -- but the 1005HA boasts a user-replaceable battery, and leaves out the recessed ports and port doors (which we found to be slightly annoying -- though attractive -- in our review of the 1008HA). Well, it's up on Amazon for pre-order now, which means we might be seeing this one sooner rather than later. For now, it's priced at $349.99, but we'll see if that price holds when it's actually available.

Dell Vostro 1220 leaks out, looks as cool as it sounds

It's hard to hate on Dell's Vostro lineup: cheap is cheap, and there's nothing wrong with that. In truth, it could probably look a lot worse, but there's just something vaguely depressing about these unflattering leaked shots of what's apparently a crimson version of an upcoming 12-inch Vostro 1220 model -- in comparison with the fairly clean lines of the existing lineup, these new curves aren't doing the laptop any style favors, though it's at least an improvement over the existing 12-inch model. Specs are certainly alright, with a Core 2 Duo T6750 processor (remember back when every small, cheap computer wasn't running Atom?), 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, SD card slot, ExpressCard and even a fingerprint reader, and we're sure the price is even better. No word on a release date.

ASRock Multibook G22 packs Ion, Atom 330 and a multitouch trackpad into 12-inch laptop

ASRock isn't exactly the very first company we think of when it comes to innovation, but the ASUS spinoff actually has a pretty good track record of going out on a limb. The new Multibook G22, for instance, combines the dual core Atom 330 processor, NVIDIA Ion, 2GB of RAM, a feature-rich multitouch trackpad, and a widescreen 12.1-inch 1366 x 768 display. It still feels "netbook-ey" for our money, but in a good way. Other perks include a 10-in-1 card reader, big people hard drive capacities (320GB instead of the 160GB netbook max), VGA and HDMI, 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a DVD burner. It all weighs in at over 3.3 pounds without battery, and measures more than an inch thick. Yeah, those last few bullet points might throw this out of the realm of netbook contention, but at least there's an Atom processor in here keeping things slow enough for the most basic of tasks. No word on price or availability.

BenQ gets its AMD Yukon kicks with the Joybook Lite T131

AMD's all about the thin-and-light category with its latest chips, and BenQ is happy to oblige with this new Joybook Lite T131 running AMD's Yukon chipset. At 4 pounds and 1.1-inches thick, however, the 13.3-inch laptop isn't incredibly notable in either department -- especially since it's short a disc drive -- but it's still a pretty attractive little unit. There's a 320GB HDD, SD reader and our favorite, an anti-glare screen, but other than the webcam and mic the laptop is pretty low on perks. It's available in either "opulent midnight blue" or "snowy white" and will be hitting China in June, with no word on price or when they might spread the love.

Dell Latitude Z series laptop leaked, sized up in pictures

With nary another word in terms of specs or details, one lucky forum goer at NotebookReview has posted what looks to be pics of a new, as of yet unannounced Dell Latitude Z Series laptop. Not much to say at the moment, aside from the obvious Adamo influence, but we did spot a biometric fingerprint scanner, an oddly-placed ethernet port in the back, and Windows / Intel Centrino stickers. Earlier in the thread another person, albeit lacking any physical proof of owning one, chimed in to say it'd have a 15-inch matte screen, Core 2 Duo processor, webcam with facial recognition, and DisplayPort, with a scheduled release a week from today. Judging by the ports in the pics, it's definitely a thin one -- could we be seeing Dell finally dip its toes into the CULV market? With any luck, we'll be hearing more about this soon.

New MacBook Pros shipped with HDDs only have 1.5Gbps SATA enabledm

Apple might have bumped the 13-inch unibody MacBook to Pro status at WWDC last week, but it looks like all the shuffling around to reduce costs has had an unfortunate side effect: new MacBook Pros that ship with HDDs only have a 1.5GBps SATA enabled, while SSD configs are apparently getting the full 3.0GBps SATA II experience that used to be standard. For most people this won't make too much difference since traditional hard drives can't move data that fast, but it's something to keep in mind if you're hoping to buy an HDD unit and swap in a speedier SSD, since your max performance will be bottlenecked. We've verified that our review units with HDDs all have the slower settings, but we've put in a call to Apple to get some more answers on this -- stay tuned.

J&W Minix 811 netbook gets the hands-on treatment

Computex Taipei may be over and done with for another year, but the netbooks on display at the show just keep on surfacing, and the folks at Netbooknews.com have now provided a hands-on with one that didn't exactly get a ton of attention earlier: the J&W Minix 811. While there's expectedly not a ton of surprises when it comes to the specs, this one does seem to be thinner and lighter than the average netbook and, even better still, it has both a matte screen and fairly large and apparently responsive keyboard.

HP introduces cheaper dv2, dv3, and dv6 laptops, fantastically ugly dv6 Artist Edition

HP's just kicked out a slew of updates to its laptop lines, and thankfully the biggest news is that they've gotten cheaper. The HP dv2z brings the low end of the 12.1-inch AMD Neo ultraportable down to $599, while the larger Intel-based dv3t is now $649. The dv6 gets two new editions, including the pictured $949 dv6z Artist Edition 2 preloaded with a bunch of Corel art software and a $649 dv6t base model that thankfully loses the awful lid artwork. Seriously, we know HP had to use the design after it won the HP / MTV Notebook Design Contest, but we just don't think too many people want to rock the"surfing peacock" look. There are also a bunch of new eco-friendly printers if you're into that sort of thing.

MSI's X-Slim X320 now shipping in the US for $599

MSI's X-Slim X340 has already made its way out into this brave, new world, but the version that checks in at a score less (for whatever reason) is just now starting to do the same. If you're looking for the least expensive way to snag yourself an X-Slim, head on over to one of a few reputable e-tailers and part ways with $599. Depending on courier and location, you should be reveling in your decision within a few business days. Oh, if only everything else in this world was so easy.

Swiveling ASUS Eee PC T91 does multitouch in Windows 7

Like so many other dodgy things in life, ASUS' Eee PC T91 has been around the block a time or two. It wasn't until this week, however, that ASUS finally came clean with a full specifications list for the swivel-screen netvertible. The 3G-equipped machine also packs a GPS module, Bluetooth, WiFi, an 8.9-inch LED-backlit touch panel, Intel's Atom Z520 CPU, Ethernet, a multicard reader, VGA output, twin USB 2.0 sockets and audio in / out ports. Sadly, there's still no definite US release date, but we suspect it can't be too far off now. In related news, this very machine was caught showcasing its elite multitouch skills with Windows 7.

Samsung N310 now available to order in the US

Have you been captivated by the coverage that Samsung's N310 has been getting -- and more than a little eager to get in on the action yourself? Could you at least pretend for the moment? Best Buy has just made the lovable netbook available for ordering online in the States. $479.99 gets you a 10.1-inch netbook with a 6-cell battery, an Atom N270 CPU, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, and all the other good stuff you've been reading about. If you order now you can expect to get your device in 1-2 weeks.

Viliv X70 MID gets some use, makes quite an impression

We've had our eye on Viliv's X70 since it was nothing but a render... and a beautiful dream. Now it looks like the kids at jkOnTheRun have got their hands on one and have given it the what-for. The conclusion? If there is a MID in your future, you will want to give this thing some serious consideration. According to the reviewer, the 7-inch, 1024 × 600 display seems more than generous (especially after using the 4.8-inch S5 for any length of time), giving the user plenty of room for shuffling items around on the desktop with his or her phalanges. Besides looking good, this bad boy is also thinner than the aforementioned S5, even after throwing in a webcam. Other thoughts? "Reading e-books" in portrait mode is "awesome," apparently, and the speed is "very fast," as one would expect from a device with an SSD. He has yet to test the integrated 3G (yet), but rest assured that it is there. We're still holding out for a release date and a price for this guy -- but in the mean time, make sure you peep the video after the break.

Acer Aspire Timeline thin-and-lights priced for the US: $600 to $900

Acer's Aspire Timeline inexpensive thin-and-lights have been popping up here and there around the world since we first laid eyes on 'em in April, and now the CULV machines are ready to hit the States. Pricing is actually a little lower than we initially heard, with the base 15.6-inch 1.3GHz Pentium SU2700 machine coming in at $598, but you're more interested in the two smaller machines: the 14-inch, 4.2-pound 1.4GHz SU3500 Core Solo unit is $699, while the 13.3-inch, 3.5-pound 1.4GHz SU9400 Core 2 Duo pictured above is $899. All three machines feature 16:9 1366 x 768 LED-backlit displays driven by Intel 4500MHD graphics, and battery life exceeds eight hours, aided by a PowerSmart energy-saving switch. So -- anyone still thinking about an Adamo?

Mobinnova élan smartbook powered by NVIDIA Tegra

Ready for the smartbook revolution? Too late, cause here they come -- and the first officially-announced product we've got is the Mobinnova élan netbook, a NVIDIA Tegra-powered machine that weighs in at just two pounds but can pump out 720p video on its 8.9-inch screen. It's not at all clear what OS this guy's running, but we're told that it has an "innovative 3D graphical user interface," supports hardware-accelerated Flash video -- which is huge freaking deal, if you ask us -- has WiFi and 3G, and can play video for five to ten hours on a single charge. That's pretty impressive, but we'll wait to see what pricing looks like -- if it's cheaper than the sub-$300 10-inch netbooks that are starting to arrive we'd say it could be a huge winner. That's not all for Mobinnova's Tegra announcements either: there's also the T8 tablet, which repackages the élan in a 10.1-inch tablet form factor with GPS and HDMI out.

Toshiba NB205 hands-on, looking rather sweet

Laptop's just put up its hands-on of Toshiba's latest 10.1-inch netbook, the NB205. They're giving it pretty high marks as far as design goes, calling the keyboard and trackpad "stellar," and the battery "promising." It boasts an LED-backlit LCD which they're pretty fond of, and we have to say we're really liking the metal look ourselves. The NB205 will come in two configurations, with the higher-end boasting an Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM and an 160GB hard drive with Windows XP Home. The lower end model can be had for $349 (it's got a plastic, non-island style keyboard), while the metal, higher end model will will run $399 (the former will come in pink, white, blue and brown, while the latter will be available in black only)

Olidata Conte ultraportable finally shows itself, looks mighty good

My, my Olidata -- why on Earth have you been depriving our wandering eyes from this beauty for so long? After being originally introduced at CES, we've heard precisely nothing since... until now, obviously. At long last, the striking Conte ultraportable has found its way outside of the lab over in Italy, sporting an ultrathin frame, chiclet-style keyboard, a bezel that's a bit too wide for our tastes, an HDMI output and a price tag starting at just €799 ($1,129). From what we can gather, a few versions of the machine will be available, one of which sports an SU2700 CPU, 13.3-inch LED-backlit display, a 120GB hard drive, 3GB of RAM, Bluetooth, WiFi and a multi-touch trackpad. Another variant is slated to include a Core Solo SU3500 CPU and a 120GB HDD, while yet another gets a Core 2 Duo SL9400 and a 128GB SSD.
